Om Benza Satto Hung or Om Vajra Sattva Hum – Purification Mantra

Om Benza Satto Hung mantra (or Om Vajra Sattva Hum) is the short version of the 100 syllable mantra (Vajrasattva mantra).

It is commonly repeated 100,000 times with the objective of purifying the karma of the individual reciting it.

He represents the principle of purification and is a supreme Buddhist deity who defines the purity of the enlightened mind. He manifests the purity of the mind, body, and speech of all Buddhas.

In some Buddhist traditions, He’s regarded as being the ”Adi-buddha”, or the ”primordial Buddha” from whom all other Buddhas emanate.

Vajrasattva encompasses the ability to dissolve spiritual impurities such as negative karmic forces and tendencies with the intention to help sentient beings to a better reincarnation or to reach enlightenment.

It is thought that envisioning Bodhisattva Vajrasattva melting into one’s body one will become inseparable from Bodhisattva Vajrasattva’s pure body, mind, and speech. His healing and purification power are incredibly powerful and indestructible.

In iconography, He is usually seen as the mind’s pure essence and is always holding a vajra (thunderbolt) and ghanta (a handbell). His face is luminescent and gentle. The whole radiates as a rainbow.

The Thunderbolt (symbolic of a diamond) held in his right hand is a spiritual tool with the capacity to cut any substance yet it cannot be cut itself. This implies the indestructible purity that Bodhisattva Vajrasattva embodies.

The handbell (ghanta) in his left hand is symbolic of knowledge and compassion and the unity of the two, which is fundamental to reaching enlightenment.

The Meaning Of Om Benza Satto Hung (Om Vajra Sattva Hum)

This mantra is entreating Bodhisattva Vajrasattva to stand beside the individual as a spiritual guide and friend who will manifest in their daily meditations and in other areas of their lives.

This purification mantra is praying Vajrasattva to be both the means for a pathway and the pathway itself towards liberation and enlightenment for all sentient beings. Whether the mantra is recited as a part of the purification rites at a ceremony or to be used as a purification practice, this is a potent mantra.

„The essential obstacles to progress along the path to enlightenment are the obscurations that come from our past negative actions. There are different kinds of negative actions. Some, like killing, lying, stealing, or cheating are definitely intrinsically unvirtuous.

Others actions are transgressions of vows and precepts that the Buddha or one’of the spiritual teachers have taught to help one progress spiritually.

The principal purpose of the Vajrasattva purification practice is to purify these obscurations. It is said, The only virtue of sin is that it can be purified. As a matter of fact, there is nothing that cannot be purified, even the most supposedly heinous deed.” – Rizong Rinpoche’s quote.
