Meaning

Govinda is another name for Vishnu or Krishna.

Go signifies cows, and go signifies land, and go also signifies senses. There are three meanings for ”go.”

Vinda signifies pleasure-giving. He gives pleasure to the senses, He gives pleasure to the cows, and He gives pleasure to the land. That means at any time Krishna appears, the land becomes very pleasing. The production, the situation, everything becomes very pleasing.

So Govinda signifies one who gives pleasure to the senses and to the cows. Krishna, in His abode, is always busy as a cowherd’s boy. He’s always nursing the cows. He’s always enclosed by cows.

Govinda means the cowherd’s boy or one who gives pleasure to the senses.

Gopala. Go signifies cows, and pala signifies herds. So one who controls the cowherds is also Gopala.

Govinda is the name of Krishna, which also appears as the 187th and 539th name of Vishnu in the Vishnu Sahasranama, the 1000 names of Vishnu.

As indicated by Adi Sankara’s commentary on the Vishnu Sahasranama, translated by Swami Tapasyananda, Govinda has 4 meanings:

  • The sages call Krishna “Govinda” as He pervades all the worlds, offering them power.
  • The Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata expresses that Vishnu restored the earth that had sunk into the netherworld or Patala, so all the devas blessed Him as Govinda (Protector of the Land).
  • Alternately, it means „He who is known by Vedic words alone.”
  • In the Harivamsa, Indra praised Krishna for having attained loving leadership of the cows, which Vishnu tended as a cowherd, by saying – „So men too shall praise Him as Govinda.”
