Rhinitis

If a person has rhinitis, the blood vessels inside the nose expand, causing the lining of the nose to swell.

Symptoms include – a congested or blocked nose, sneezing, an itchy nose, and a runny nose (watery discharge).

Rhinitis is classified as nonallergic and allergic:

• allergic rhinitis occurs when the body’s immune system over-responds to specific, non-infectious particles, like – molds, plant pollens, animal hair, dust mites, foods, industrial chemicals (including tobacco smoke), insect venom, and prescription medicines.
• the cause of nonallergic rhinitis is usually a viral infection, although irritants can cause it.

In 2010, around 11 million visits to physician offices resulted in the primary diagnosis of allergic rhinitis. in the US.

Worldwide, allergic rhinitis affects between 10 to 30 percent of the population.

Sinus Infection (Sinusitis)

Sinusitis is an infection or inflammation of any of the 4 groups of sinus cavities in the skull, that open into the nasal passages. About 35 million individuals in the US have sinusitis every year.

Sinusitis is usually the result of catching a common cold (a virus), although it can also be triggered by or develop into fungal and bacterial infections, as well as allergies.

Although the two may be associated and their symptoms may be similar, sinusitis is not the same as rhinitis.

Sinusitis may be classified as – subacute sinus infection, acute sinus infection, infected sinusitis, chronic sinus infection, and noninfectious sinusitis.

The following factors can significantly increase your risk of developing sinusitis:

• cystic fibrosis;
• intranasal allergies;
• a weakened immune system;
• nasal passage abnormalities, like – a nasal polyp or a deviated septum;
• activities which result in pressure changes, like – scuba diving and flying;
• spending a lot of time in areas where infectious germs are often present;
• inflamed adenoids;
• frequent breathing in pollutants;
• tobacco smoking.

Pharyngitis

Pharyngitis, also known as sore throat, is the inflammation of the back of your throat, which is called your pharynx.

It can also cause difficulty swallowing and scratchiness in the throat.

Most sore throats occur during colder months and are caused by viral infections such as the flu, common cold, measles, mono, croup, and chickenpox.

Antibiotics do not help viral sore throats. Furthermore, using antibiotics to treat viral infections helps strengthen harmful bacteria and make them resistant to this type of medicine.

In regions that have cool winters and warm summers, viral pharyngitis usually peaks during early spring and the winter.

This is a time when individuals are more likely to gather in poorly ventilated rooms and the viruses which cause a sore throat to spread easily.

The nose signifies the instinctive, emotional perception of reality, the ability to “smell the situation”, and to adapt instinctively.

When these are disrupted, the person doesn’t use her ability to adapt, the basic instinct that allows her to understand and know the world.

In the case of rhinitis, this sensation is blocked (the nose is clogged by congestion of the nasal mucosa) or disturbed (by mucous secretion).

Experiencing the symptoms of sinusitis may indicate that a person close to you is irritating.

Observe your reactions and accept them.

Pharyngitis (sore throat) – Spiritual Meaning and Causes

The pharynx represents a decision-making area – the direction towards the digestive tract (the subdiaphragmatic level of the individual, of the ego) or towards the respiratory tract (the supradiaphragmatic plan of affection).

Pharyngitis occurs in people who can not decide which direction to take, who hesitate between an attitude, individualistic interpretation, and an altruistic, affective one.

Prevention

The best method to prevent allergic rhinitis is to avoid the allergen which causes it.

Don’t overuse nasal decongestants. Using these medications for more than three days at a time can actually worsen your symptoms.

One should stay away from phlegm, mucus, histamine producing drinks, and foods.

Stress reduction and a diet rich in antioxidants, particularly fresh, dark-colored fruits, legumes, seeds, nuts, and vegetables, may help strengthen the immune system.

You may be able to manage or prevent mild sinus infections by using a humidifier (be sure to keep the humidifier clean and free of mold with frequent, thorough cleaning) in your home, avoiding tobacco smoke, and drinking plenty of liquids.

Materials that give off fumes can all make your sinus problems worse. Avoid hairspray, cleaning products, and other materials that give off fumes.

Using disposable tissues, washing hands regularly, and limiting human contact are vital preventive measures for viral pharyngitis and the common cold syndrome.

Avoid kissing or eating utensils and sharing cups with sick individuals.
