Rahu comes from the Sanskrit word “Rah” means hide – that refers to what is secret, mysterious and profound. He is considered a master of deception and instrumental in converting an enemy into a friend.
In Hindu tradition, he is a cut-off head of an asura, that swallows the sun causing eclipses. He is commonly depicted in Hindu illustrations as a serpent with no body riding a chariot drawn by eight black horses. In addition, He is described with an extraordinarily strong physique, a big mustache, and red eyes. He is one of the Navagrahas (nine planets) in Vedic astrology. The Rahu Kala (time of day under the influence of Lord Rahu) is considered inauspicious.
In Vedic astrology, Rahu is seen as a demon or asura (born of a lioness and is irreligious in nature) who does his best to plunge any area of life he controls into chaos, mystery, the head, and cruelty, and is considered to be a rogue planet. He is associated with the world of material manifestation and worldly desire (He is also viewed in the same way as Saturn), as well as random, uncontrolled growth without wisdom or understanding. Also, He represents illiteracy, addictive, perversion, contradictions, ignorance, dirty, darkness, and extremes.
Moreover, He signifies printing press, fraud, diplomatic jobs, mining of petroleum, cruelty, conspiracy, jobs requiring manipulation with facts, forgery, pleasure seekers, operators in foreign lands, manipulation, or immoral acts. Afflicting Rahu can cause diseases like intestines disorders, abuse of power, confusion, phlegm, boils, spleen problems, ulcers, epidemics, heart trouble, mental disturbances, hysteria, selfishness, hallucinations, or insanity.
In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, he is considered to have been subjugated by Guru Rinpoche, becoming one of the main protectors of the Dzogchen sacred teachings, especially the Longchen Nyingthik (literally translates as ”the seminal heart of Longchenpa”).
